Repair & Maintenance
Does winter change what you look for?
Yes, mostly at floor level. Months of slush and road salt reach the lowest hinges, the bottom brackets and the loop of each cable before anything else on the door, so those get a close look for rust. The technician also checks whether the bottom seal has been freezing to the slab, how the drive has coped with cold, stiff starts, and whether frost or salt film has been blinding the sensors near the floor. Can you replace my rollers with quieter ones during the tune-up?
Often, yes, if you decide you want them and stock is on the truck. Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run noticeably quieter than plain steel rollers and need no lubricant. Rollers on the middle sections can be changed with the door clamped in the track; the bottom rollers sit in the bottom brackets, which hold spring tension, and are changed as part of a separate job. The technician can tell you how many are worn and what the change would involve. Garage Door Tune-Up
I only tapped the door with the bumper. Why is it off its track?
A sectional door is strong in the direction it travels and surprisingly easy to push sideways at a single roller. A light nudge on the bottom section can flex the track lip enough for the roller to slip out, after which the section twists and the rollers above follow. The good news is that this kind of event usually leaves the cables and springs alone, so the reset is often rollers, a re-formed track lip and a hinge check. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
What is a strut, and does a new section need one?
A strut is a horizontal steel stiffener fastened across the inside of a section to keep it from bowing. Wide doors, top sections where the opener arm pulls, and bottom sections that take knocks are the usual places for them. If your damaged section had a strut, the new one gets a straight strut refitted or replaced. If a top section bowed because it never had one, adding a strut is part of putting it right. Springs & Hardware
Do nylon rollers need lubricating?
The nylon tire itself needs none; spraying it or the track only collects dust that grinds the wheel. The hinge knuckles and stems where they turn benefit from a light coat of garage door lubricant once or twice a year, worked in by running the door. The ball bearings themselves are lubricated only where the roller's own maker calls for it, since some nylon rollers should not be greased there. Rollers with sealed bearings come greased from the factory and need only a wipe and a look. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Why did the hinge crack in the first place?
Steel flexed often enough eventually cracks, and several things speed that up. A door out of balance is dragged by the opener, and every hinge takes the strain. A seized roller twists its hinge on each trip. A track out of line pinches the panels at the curve. A wide panel without a strut flexes at the joint. Corrosion at the low hinges thins the steel. The technician looks for which of these was at work so the new hinge is spared the same stress. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
Should the track be lubricated?
It depends on the door, and manufacturers disagree, which surprises many people. Some want the track kept clean and dry, since lubricant there can collect grit and let the wheels skid instead of roll, wearing the roller and the track edge; others specify lubricant at the track bend. The moving parts, roller bearings, hinge pins and springs, get their own lubricant either way, in the type the manual specifies, with a few cycles of the door to spread it. What is the difference between a lift cable and a safety cable?
A lift cable does the work: it connects the door's bottom corner to the spring system and carries the door's weight. A safety or containment cable does no lifting at all. It runs through the middle of an extension spring and is anchored at both ends so that if the spring breaks, the pieces stay put. Torsion springs sit on a shaft and do not need one. Openers & Access
My opener went completely dead after a power outage. Is it finished?
Not usually. Outages and the surges that ride along with them commonly trip a breaker or a ground-fault receptacle, blow the small fuse on the board, or knock out the transformer, and each of those is a modest repair. A surge that damages the logic board itself is the more serious case, and whether that board is replaced or the unit retired depends on the model's age and part availability. The diagnosis tells you which case you have. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
Should I use the slide lock on the door with a chain drive?
No. The manual slide lock on the door is disabled or removed once an operator is connected, and the technician checks that during the repair. A motor pulling against a locked door strains the chain, strips the drive gear and can bend the top section of the door. If you want the door secured against remotes, the lock button on the wall control switches them off, and a track lock designed to work with an operator does the rest. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
What are the plastic shavings under the motor head?
They are from the drive gear inside the head unit, which is stripping its teeth. On a belt drive the gear turns the sprocket that moves the belt, so a stripped gear leaves the motor humming and the belt still. The gear-and-sprocket kit is replaced as a set, the shaft's end play is checked, and the belt is refitted and phased. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Is battery backup worth having?
For many households it is the feature they value most, especially where ice storms and winter outages are part of life. A backup battery inside or beside the head unit runs the door for a number of cycles when the power is off, so you can get the car out or put it away without heaving the door up by hand in the dark. The head unit chirps or lights an indicator when the battery needs renewing, which is every few years. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Can damaged framing be corrected during replacement?
Minor preparation may be included when it is clearly described, but deteriorated jambs, an unsound header or structural changes can require a separate trade and project decision. The assessment identifies fastening conditions before the door is ordered. That lets required carpentry or masonry work finish before new track and counterbalance brackets need secure attachment. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
When should installation wait for other work?
The project may be sequenced after framing repairs, masonry work, floor correction, electrical preparation or removal of an obstruction in the travel zone. Identifying that dependency during measurement protects the selected door dimensions and attachment plan. The proposal can separate door work from tasks handled by another trade, with a clear condition that must be ready before fitting begins. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
What happens to the old garage door?
The operator is disconnected, spring energy is released with controlled tools, and sections are removed in sequence. Tracks, cables, drums, springs, and brackets follow once their loads are managed. Disposal or recycling is handled according to the agreed scope. Clearing the old assembly also exposes jamb areas that deserve a final condition check before new anchors are placed. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
May the new door use my existing tracks?
Only when the new door instructions and field assessment establish compatibility. Track spacing and curves relate to section thickness, roller position, door weight, headroom and opener layout. A track that suited the former door may place the new sections incorrectly. Treating tracks and sections as one designed system provides a clearer basis for alignment, balance and future parts identification. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
